LIVING WITH FIRE IN CHAPARRAL ECOSYSTEMS SUMMMIT 2006

This summit was sponsored by the USDA Forest Service (Pacific Southwest Research Station) and others, and was held in Riverside on January 10-12, 2006.  About 130 participants discussed solutions and options for managing the Wildland Urban Interface, especially across jurisdictional and disciplinary boundaries, and had many opportunities for learning, discussing, and networking.  Three themes were addressed:  Before the fire, fires are survivable if you are prepared (Tuesday); During the fire, controlling chaos (Wednesday); and After the fires, planning for the next fire (Thursday).  Each day began with 3 plenary talks to provide an overview of the topics to be addressed in 3 breakout sessions that addressed the various scales:  homesite and community; landscapes and the sociological environment; and regional perspectives.  Get further information on the website http://www.fs.fed.us/psw/chaparral/past_meet/ .
