The San Diego Fire Recovery Network prepared a two-page document called “All You Wanted to Know About Living with Fire and Nature” in October 2004. It included six “lessons learned.”
Lesson 1: We are “between fires.”
Lesson 2: Chaparral and coastal sage scrub burns naturally in large “stand-replacing” fires.
Lesson 3: San Diego’s coniferous forests historically burned in frequent, low-intensity, ground fires.
Lesson 4: Plants and animals in San Diego can survive fire.
Lesson 5: The greatest reduction of fire risk comes from building fire-resistant homes and in less fire-prone locations.
Lesson 6: The first 100 feet around a home can be managed as SURVIVABLE SPACE by considering building design and materials and considering landscaping and vegetation reduction.
