PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGES FOR WILDFIRES

(Prepared in October 2005)

Reduce House Risks—Inside and Out
Know your local fire codes
Install mesh on vents, chimneys and crawlspaces
Enclose underside of above-ground decks
Use non-combustible exterior materials
Store and use flammable liquids properly

Maintain Your Yard
Prune bushes and remove dead vegetation
Keep plants low and green near the house
Use rock and pavement next to the house
Don’t leave bare ground for erosion or fast-growing weeds
Limb trees within 10 feet of roof and house
Clean gutters and roof

Prepare to Evacuate
Plan and practice for family and animal evacuation
Bring flammable yard furniture inside
Clear sofas and drapes from windows
Keep emergency and contact numbers nearby

Overall
You are responsible—for your family, your house, your own property
Know that you can prepare for, but you cannot avoid all risks of wildfire property losses
